Course Background:
Non vital teeth with mucosal fenestrations are often challenging to treat and usually require a combined therapy (endodontic treatment and periodontal surgeries). Exposure of root tip to oral environment makes it more vulnerable to plaque and calculus deposition which favours the destruction of periodontal tissues and prevents spontaneous closure of the mucosal defect. The need for early intervention is emphasized to minimize the risk of tooth loss. Meticulous handling of soft tissues and careful selection of biomaterials is imperative for the successful outcomes following treatment of such defects. This workshop will cover the biological and the clinical aspects of managing these challenging defects with demonstration followed by hands-on in animal model.

Course Outline:
The preconference course will comprise of lecture followed by demonstrations and Hands-on exercises by participants on animal jaw model.

Lecture will cover following aspects of mucosal fenestration management in endodontically involved teeth:

  1. Endodontic disinfection protocol for endo-perio cases
  2. Timing and method of obturation
  3. Role of periodontal microsurgery in managing mucosal defects in endodontically involved teeth
  4. Principles of flap design using a minimally invasive approach
  5. Surgical root end management
  6. To familiarize about the anatomy of the palate to avoid the possible complications.
  7. Harvesting of connective tissue graft and selection of the technique
  8. Suturing techniques for flap closure and stabilization of connective tissue graft
  9. Application of platelet rich fibrin in managing mucosal fenestration defects
  10. Postoperative care and maintenance

Demonstrations and Hands-on

Demonstrations will be given on animal jaw model for incisions and flap design, harvesting of connective tissue graft and its stabilization at the mucosal defect site, and preparation of platelet rich fibrin membranes.

Participants will perform hands-on exercises on an animal jaw for the following surgical procedures:

  1. Flap preparation
  2. Harvesting connective tissue graft with single incision technique and L-technique
  3. Suturing exercise for the flap closure and CTG stabilization
